Morning in San Luis

The Hand that Holds Up the Sky

I had a wonderful weekend and I hope you did, too. I visited my middle daughter in San Luis Obispo and we did some photography. Fun. We shot some landscapes and some cattle grazing on the smooth, round hills dotted with live oaks. No matter how many times I drive past these hills, I am always struck by the beauty of the green trees and gold grass. It reminds me of a landscape in a fairy tale book.

The morning we went out was foggy so I didn’t get as many landscape shots as I’d like to. I did get some great cattle portraits.

Watsui Cattle

The Watusi cattle had unusual markings, sort of like an African antelope or a giraffe. They weren’t aggressive, but I didn’t want to get too close to those horns. I had a long lens, 300mm and with a small sensor that translates to 450mm and I needed every mm of it! I must have gotten within 20 feet or so of the animals, not much closer than that.

I loved being out early in the morning like that, around 7 am. I am a sleepyhead and rarely get up early and if I do it is just to sit at the table and sip my morning coffee. So, to be out at that time of day seemed special, as if I were in Africa or India, best yet, enjoying the day with my daughter.
