Saxon Village

Romanian villagers drive cattle to pasture

Milking Time

Romania 2012

Gypsies drive their cattle through a Saxon village. When communism fell, the German government welcomed the Saxons to return even though their forbears had settled in Romania a thousand years ago. I’m sure it was a heart-wrenching decision for them to leave their homes built with their ancestors’ own hands and lovingly cared for all these years.  After they moved out, the gypsies moved in. Every cloud has a silver lining.

I use this photo for Thanksgiving Day because I often went to my Grandmother’s farm for Thanksgiving dinner. She didn’t raise turkeys so she cooked the biggest rooster on the farm. I don’t know how she cooked the bird.  She called it “baked”. It was never brown and crispy. But it had a delicious flavor. Talk about free-range. He’d never been inside a coop except nights when my grandma would put him there to protect him from varmints.

Happy Thanksgiving!
