Love at the Oasis

Kazakhstan 2016

We visited a camel farm to watch a woman milk one of the cows or whatever female camels are called. But milk was not the prime harvest from these animals. Urine was. It seems that in Kazakhstan drinking camel urine can cure what ails you. Little boys stood in the camel corral with a small cup. When a camel urinated, which is rather a brief and spatter-y affair, the boys leaped into action and caught as much urine as possible. Later, someone would drink it as part of a nearby sanitorium’s health regimen.

The residents of the sanitorium seemed to be mostly women. They testified to the efficacy of the camel urine cure, but I think that just being away from the responsibilities of running a household had more to do with their sense of well-being.
