Deja Vu

Ethiopia: women and children of the Ara tribe wait at the mill

Morning at the Mill

Ethiopia 2013

We climbed a long hill at a rapid pace. We had an appointment with the chief of the Ari tribe and our guide was anxious lest we be late. But when we passed this mill, I stopped; my brain flooded with long forgotten memories from my girlhood days on the farm in South Carolina.  An overwhelming feeling of “You’ve been here before” filled me with happiness.

Maybe it was the way the lush, green farmland glistened with the morning’s dew.  Or the smell of soil being plowed into furrows by slender boys guiding oxen… maybe it was the way the smiling, chattering, barefoot women and children dressed in long colorful, cotton skirts stood about the mill watching me with a friendly look on their faces. Whatever it was, I felt at home.

The moment was too short. We had to hurry and this photo is my memory of that moment of deja vu.
