Euphrates Dam

lake formed by damming the Euphrates River

Euphrates, Cradle of Civilization

The Euphrates river and Ataturk Dam, the 6th largest earthen dam in the world.  The river starts in the mountains of Turkey and runs through Syria and Iraq. Most of the water comes from Turkey through snow pack and rainfall.

Our guide said this dam was Turkey’s weapon pointed at Syria, which depends on the water from the river. If Turkey closed off or diverted the waters, Syria would be strangled.

We shot this from the bridge crossing the river. The day was gorgeous with blue skies and white puffy clouds. The reflections were mirror perfect. I thought it was a piece of cake. When I looked at my photos, I could see no particular point of interest. The beautiful reflections, deep shadows and bright highlights confused my eye. I had to decrease the contrast considerably to get this to a point that it made sense to my eye.
