Mostar Bridge Before the War

The Bridge at Mostar

The Bridge at Mostar

This was shot in 1989. It was before the Balkan war and the bombing of this beautiful, 500 year old bridge.

The village was a tourist destination. Sidewalk cafes with Campari signs invited you to sit in the shade and drink something cool. It was a sunny day, that day. The light made the river look a dark emerald green color. It was an unreal color, but I think it was natural.  We had a drink in a riverside cafe before walking onto the bridge. Men in swimsuits resembling Speedos stood on the 80 foot high bridge offering to dive off if you gave them some money. That took nerve!
