Hunting with Eagles

Hunter holding Golden Eagle after the hunt

End of the Hunt

Western Mongolia 2014

After his Golden Eagle has attacked the prey, the hunter retrieves the eagle and places the hood over his eyes. Here the eagle seems eager to continue eating the rabbit. I suppose that once his hood is in place, he calms down. I don’t know if the eagle is allowed to eat his fill later. I do know that the eagles will not  hunt if they are not hungry.

The hunter’s coat is fox fur and so is his hat. Furs are needed when the winter temperature is -40C and winter lasts from November to April. I think this year it began in October because when I arrived in Ulaanbaatar, the capital, patches of snow were on the ground.

Thanks, Torie. I loved those fox fur coats! Normally, wearing a fur coat doesn’t seem manly to us, but these men looked manly in theirs!
