September 30 and there was snow on the ground near the old Buddhist monastery. Lichen blossoms, reminding me of my Italian grandmother’s best china, grew in profusion on rocks protruding from the frozen earth.

A solemn-faced balbal seemed to be protecting a female-looking stellae that kneels behind him.

The countryside appeared barren at first glance, but when closely observed there was a plethora of things to photograph. Dark came too soon.
