Moroccan Oasis

vintage photo of underground water channels in the desert of Morocco's Tafilalet region

Khettara near Hassilabeid

Morocco: Tafilalet Region in the late 1990’s

Strings of khettara, underground water channels, lead from the oasis of Hassilabeid to the Berber village of Ksar Merzouga. Built in the 1400’s, now no longer in use, they were used to sustain the small desert villages by diverting river water or tapping into underground pools.

It was the perfect time of day for this shot…late afternoon. The low sun gave me these long shadows emphasizing the openings into the channels. I added a bluish and pink tone to give the photo a vintage look.
