Rabari Woman with Ivory Bracelets

Rann of Kutch 2009

The villagers were used to camera wielding tourists. The younger ones were hysterical. They grabbed us, pulled at our clothing, wanted to pose then refused to pose. It was a game of cat and mouse and we were the mouse.

Luckily, the older Rabari were a bit jaded and did not reject the request for a photograph. The woman above wears antique ivory bracelets typical of the Rabari tribe. Only older women wore real ivory and very few of them possessed such valuable jewelry. Silver cuffs were more common or the less expensive lac bracelets that nearly span the entire arm. This woman is fortunate, she wears four ivory bracelets.

A Rabari man with fabulous cheek bones and luxuriant moustache smiles for me… he’s handsome enough for Bollywood.
