Rice Terraces of Longji

The Farmer

Longji, China 2005

A Chinese farmer inspects his rice crop at the top of the terrace covered mountain. Many of the farmers were old. Elderly men and women, dressed in the black costume of their tribe, strode up the steep hills to harvest the rice or to repair the irrigation pipes. Their ancestors began to farm the hills more than 400 years ago and the present day people live as their tribe has lived for centuries. But now they offer rooms in their homes to tourists.
