A Mongolian Birthday Party

Mongolia: dirt track leading to distant mountains

Khovd Highway

Mongolia 2014

I had my birthday while I was in Mongolia. I told only one woman and made her promise not to tell anyone else. I hate a fuss. On my birthday, we drove in our Russian vans to Khovd from Bayan-Olgii. About thirty miles was hard surface and the rest was a dirt track as you see here. The land was empty except for herds of horses or camels and once we saw a ger with a mother and child gathering dung for fuel. Snow covered mountains draped in gray gauzy clouds formed a backdrop to all that emptiness.

Our van was warm and the conversation was delightful. I had a chocolate bar from a confectionary in Ghana and we shared it. I was thinking that this was a good birthday.

I gave this landscape a curved fisheye look using software from Topaz Labs. Why? Because I can and it gives a “top of the world” look to my photo.
